Cloth Diapering: The Flats Challenge
I have read several stories over the past months about people saving money in this rough economy by changing disposable diapers less often, drying the wet ones to reuse and so on. This is so unsanitary and so unhealthy. Disposable diapers can be so very expensive. More and more people are going back to using cloth diapers both for financial reasons as well as for environmental ones. We used cloth diapers part time on both o the older kids and nearly full time on the youngest. Cloth diapers have come a long way to being user friendly. It has become increasingly difficult to fight the idea that cloth diapers are difficult to use, expensive to buy and time consuming to wash. Many families believe it is not possible to cloth diaper if they do not own a washer and dryer or have several hundred dollars to invest in a stash of diapers. This is the dilemma that spurred the Flats and Handwashing Challenge first blogged about on dirtydiaperlaundry.com. They have challenged the cloth diapering community to forgo our beloved all-in-ones and pocket diapers that resemble disposables in style and ease of use for one week... from May 23-30. We are to cloth diaper our children using whatever flats we can obtain, including actual commercially available flats, receiving blankets, flour sack towels, flannel sheeting, old t-shirts, etc. We may have up to 5 covers of our choosing in rotation to cover our flats. We are to HAND WASH all said diapers as well as line dry them.
My first thought was NO WAY am I handwashing diapers, ewwwwwww! Well, then I read about a camp style washer and thought I COULD give this a try... if nothing else, my arms will get a great workout! This video even shows you how to use the camp washer.
I am excited. Had I heard about this several weeks ago, I know my 1st thought would have been to go straight to the Salvation Army or Good Will and purchase a couple of flannel sheets to cut and sew up into some flat diapers. Well...... my sewing machine is broken. I am going to take this challenge, pretending I am a completely un-crafty person, showing that you need not know how to sew to cloth diaper, cheaply.
